A Green Solution for the Recovery of Cyprus, its Land and its People.

The Mediterranean is burning and so are we. Deep wounds, which neither ultimate compensations, nor so-called attributions of responsibility, resignations, additional audit committees and so on, can alleviate.

Cyprus is once again facing the dual challenge of ecological restoration and economic recovery. While traditional methods of restoring agricultural lands are slow, there is an unexpected ally that could speed up the process. An ancient crop deeply rooted in our island’s history, that has the potential to heal the land, boost the economy and prevent future disasters. This is Klostiki, as in Greek for Hemp, or Industrial Hemp. Known for its versatility, rapid growth and environmental benefits, hemp offers a sustainable path for scorched areas.

How Can Hemp Help?

1. Soil Restoration and Erosion Control

Hemp’s deep root system stabilizes burned soils, preventing erosion while absorbing toxins such as heavy metals from the ash. Its rapid growth (harvest in 3-4 months) means faster ground coverage compared to slow-growing trees. Studies in Italy and California have shown that hemp is effective in detoxifying fire-affected soils.

2. Carbon Sequestration and Cleaner Air

Fires release huge amounts of CO₂, but hemp acts as a carbon sink, absorbing more CO₂ per hectare than forests. Its dense foliage also traps ash in the air, improving air quality—a critical benefit for communities in Cyprus near burned areas.

3. Sustainable Reconstruction with Hempcrete

Instead of relying on materials with a high carbon footprint, Cyprus could use hempcrete—a fire-resistant, insulating material made from industrial hemp and lime. Hemp-concrete homes are energy efficient, mold-resistant, fireproof and ideal for Mediterranean climates.

Brief example:

Utilising just 1000 decares of the 13,667 decares of burned agricultural land for hemp cultivation could produce material to build over 100 homes measuring 100 square meters.

4. Economic Recovery for Farmers

Industrial hemp provides a high-value crop for farmers recovering from fire losses. With proper regulation, Cyprus can develop a local industrial hemp industry, reducing its reliance on vulnerable monocultures.

5. Preventing Future Fires

Hemp has a high moisture content, which makes it less flammable. Its cultivation could serve as a green fire protection zone, protecting villages and forests.

KLOSTIKI, as in Greek for HEMP, is not just a crop—it is a tool for ecological restoration and Cyprus can use this tool to turn the wounds of fires into sustainable development.

Global success stories that demonstrate this include California, USA, where farmers have used hemp to restore burned land, Italy, where hemp has cleaned up land contaminated by industrial fires, and Portugal, where pilot projects are using hemp to control post-fire erosion.

Cyprus has the opportunity to lead post-fire restoration in the Mediterranean by integrating hemp into its land management, building and agricultural strategies. With the right policy framework, education on the agricultural and commercial benefits of hemp, and strategic investments, this ancient crop can become one of the foundations of Cyprus’ green resilience.

As Cyprus rebuilds, hemp offers a triple benefit: healing ecosystems, creating jobs, and preventing future fires.

It’s time to act—before the next fire season begins.
