Amid the vast influx of hemp-derived cannabinoids sweeping the globe, few have escaped public understanding more than HHC. Due to only recently reaching the market and only a handful selling it, making sense of HHC is somehow complicated. A cannabinoid offering great potential, of which you will be hearing more about it soon.
What is Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC)?
Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a hydrogenated derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol. It is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid that has rarely been identified as a trace component in Cannabis sativa / Hemp, but can also be produced synthetically by hydrogenation of cannabis extracts. HHC was first synthesized in 1944 by Roger Adams using natural THC found in Cannabis sativa. While Adams created HHC from conventional THC extracted from hemp, nowadays the cannabinoid is usually obtained through a process that uses industrial hemp plants with very low THC content and often higher CBD content. The use of hydrogenation is not limited to the production of cannabinoids. A similar process is used, for example, to convert vegetable oil into margarine.
While HHC has been shown to bind to the CB1 receptor, it binds with weaker affinity than THC, which has typically been an indication that it is not as intoxicating as typical THC. Since HHC is found naturally in the cannabis plant, humans have likely been unknowingly consuming small amounts of this cannabinoid for centuries.
What is the difference between HHC & CBD?
Both HHC and CBD are naturally present in the cannabis plant. They are both part of the family of “cannabinoids” and both are exploited naturally from cannabis hemp flowers and can be extracted to develop derivative products.
The main difference is the effect they have on the user. HHC has a more powerful effect with a strong physical relaxation, a slight mental mental stimulation and sometimes accompanied by a mild euphoria.
What are the effects of HHC?
When it comes to the effects of HHC, users usually feel full of energy with it. They report that they are alert, their brain is working “at full speed”, and they experience the disappearance of the usual physical pains. To what extent this is a subjective feeling, it is difficult to judge. Other HHC effects have been described as alleviating, stimulating appetite, promoting relaxation and sleep, mild drowsiness and mild euphoria.
